Coloring Art
At the beginning, Gregory Dubus automatically made all kinds of scribbles containing sentences, quotes, faces, mathematical formulas ... When he realized that he was an artist, his works became more structured and turned into unconscious (not premeditated) drawings.
He very quickly turned to the technique of coloring to achieve his works because filling coloring books with color gave him the same relaxation and pleasure that he experienced as a child.
His need for drawing and coloring certainly stems from what in psychoanalysis is called sublimation, which is the channeling of a frustrated desire. Indeed, born prematurely, the artist did not experience the pleasure of sucking his mother's breast and therefore experienced a withdrawal. So, what better for him than to realize his desire by making drawings (which is dessins in French but also means breasts) and filling the void (a lack) with colors.
If this explanation of the origin of his works seems far-fetched to you, it certainly wouldn't be for a psychoanalyst!
By previously making his own geometric abstract structures and compositions, the artist has elevated simple coloring to an art, hence, the term "Coloring Art" he uses when talking about this artistic technique.
